The Wilton Education Foundation is excited to celebrate “Reading Rocks!” and what marks the 15th year of a fun, non-competitive Read-a-Thon for PreK-5th grade students at Miller-Driscoll and Cider Mill Schools! The goal of Reading Rocks! is to encourage children to have fun reading while raising money for the Wilton Education Foundation – which means all proceeds benefit our public schools!
This year to celebrate 15 years of Reading Rocks! we will be celebrating with a Reading Rocks Magic Show on Wednesday February 11th at Wilton High School’s Little Theater! Register and learn more here !
“Reading Rocks!” is Wilton Education Foundation’s largest fundraiser which over the years has collectively raised over $500,000 for our Wilton Public Schools.
This outstanding effort has helped WEF fund:
- Makerspaces in all four schools to support coding, robotics, STEM programs, & podcasting
- Recording studio used for the news at Miller-Driscoll (MD-TV)
- Miller-Driscoll (student-run) postal system
- Continued expansion of the recording studio at Wilton High School
- Learning Commons upgrade & video studio at Cider Mill
- Support of Science Fair at Middlebrook
- Greenhouse at Middlebrook School
- Odyssey of the Mind Sponsorship
- Document cameras used for remote learning technologies
- Ongoing professional development opportunities for our teachers to support cutting-edge curriculum initiatives
And more!
HOW IT WORKS
Students
Students create personal campaign pages, then invite friends and family to pledge money toward their reading goal. If you prefer to not create a page online, a paper form can be printed here.
Students may read independently, be read to by someone else, flip through a picture book, or even read with someone on the phone or via Zoom – anything goes that helps the student celebrate reading!
Students will have from January 30th – February 13th to complete their reading goals
Families and Friends
Ask your student for a link to their personal campaign page. This year there will also be paper entries and cash/check pledges. Please return those to your student’s classroom. Checks should be made payable to Wilton Education Foundation.
Pledges must be completed NO LATER than Friday, February 6th.
Pledges are suggested in $5 increments in support of your child’s overall commitment to read more, rather than a per-page or per-book challenge. We’re encouraging each student to try to raise at least $25.
Other Ways We Are Celebrating Reading Rocks!
In honor of our 15th year, we will celebrate World Read Aloud Day during the Reading Rocks pledge period which is on Wednesday, February 4th. On this day, community members will read stories in each class across both schools. Also, be sure to visit the Wilton Library in addition to the school libraries to check out new books. This is also a great time for your child to get their own library card!
Again, this year students will be able to submit their reading trackers to be entered for an extra prize. Please use the button at the top of the page to upload your child’s reading log between February 14th to February 25th to submit an image of their reading trackers for that extra prize entry. *To enter they also must have at least one $5 pledge by the end of the pledge period.
Please use these reading tracker printables to help your student with their goal.
THERE ARE FUN PRIZES TOO!
- As of February 6th, the Miller-Driscoll PreK-2nd Grade and the Cider Mill House with the highest participation percentage will earn fun participation prizes!
- For every $5 raised by February 6th, each student will earn a chance to enter into a drawing to win an iPAD* or $50 Barnes & Noble gift card! For example, if your child raises $50, he or she earns 10 chances to win! There will be one Barnes & Noble gift card awarded per PreK-2nd grade at Miller-Driscoll and one per House at Cider Mill, and one iPad Grand Prize will be awarded to one student across all grades PreK-5. *Win an iPad or a gift card of equivalent value to the Barnes & Noble.
- All prizes will be announced after the reading period is over and classes resume from February break.
